First Generation (2007)
Although the first generation of the iPhone was released in 2007, its first concept was planned earlier in 2004. Disguised as “Project Purple”, Apple started to gather a team of 1,000 employees, led by software engineer Scot Forstall, hardware engineer Tony Fadell, and design engineer Sir Jonathan Ive. Apple CEO, the late Steve Jobs also focused more on the project and secretly collaborated with Cingular Wireless (later on became AT&T Mobility) at the price of $150 million over thirty months. According to the CEO, the “i” in every Apple device (iPhone, iMac, iPod, etc.) stands for internet, instruct, individual, inform, and inspire. Later in January 2007, Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone publicly at the Macworld convention at the Moscone Center, San Francisco. The first initial models, 4 GB ($499) and 8 GB ($599) went on sale and garnered support across various retail stores in the US. The first generation of the iPhone was later on released overseas; starting in Canada and major European countries.
iPhone 4S (2011)
In September 2011, Apple next introduced the details for the next generation of iPhone, which turned out to be the iPhone 4S. Due to a large following from smartphone users worldwide—despite its expensive selling price—Apple quickly became the largest mobile handset vendor in the world, surpassing long-time leader, Nokia. Within 24 hours after its initial release, over one million 4S units were sold worldwide.
iPhone 6 and 6S (2014)
In September 2014, the iPhone 6 and 6S were announced at an event at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. Both models featured a larger screen than its predecessor, iPhone 5S, and 5C. A few months after its release, however, some users have noticed that this version of the iPhone bent after normal use. This malfunction was made popular by the term “Bendgate” or “Touch Disease”. But, Apple quickly made changes and released more bend-resistant iPhone models in iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.
iPhone 13 and 13 Pro Series (2021)
The iPhone 13 and 13 Pro series were virtually announced in September 2021. It featured noticeable changes such as bigger battery size, improved camera resolutions, and an adaptive 120 Hz ProMotion display for the Pro series. It also maintained some controversial changes, such as the headphone jack removal, which was done five years ago (iPhone 7).
